Roza Khalikova

visual artist|digital painter

Roza Khalikova is a media artist working with AR technologies and digital environments. My practice explores the interaction between the physical perception of reality and the nature of genetic memory, analysing their dynamic relationship through time-space transformations and conceptual shifts.

I perceive genetic memory as an intangible but voluminous phenomenon that transcends linear time. It is something that cannot be directly brought into physical space, but it exists, pulsates, refracts in perception. This is why I work in the context of the digital medium — it is also intangible and capable of modelling complex, multi-layered spaces that viewers look at and in which they form their sense of reality.

My works are metaphorical visualisations of how memories of nature manifest in the outside world. I combine archaic imagery passed down through generations with contemporary digital environments using AR installations, generative algorithms and glitch processes. For me, glitch is not just an effect, but a way of expressing the errors of memory reproduction: failures, fragmentation, disconnections between past and present, and the scientific concepts of quantum string theory and neuroscientific models of memory help me to make sense of this interaction. Just as microtubules in the neurons of the brain layer memories, amplifying the important ones and erasing the unimportant ones, in my work the digital layers of memory are transformed, mapped, creating new forms of reality.

Through my art I reveal the hidden dimensions — those embedded in us at the level of genetic memory and manifested in experiences altered by technological processes. My practice allows us to rethink and expand our perception of the world by focusing on the subtle structures that connect humans to nature.

Works can be found in private collections in Russia.

HOW I SEE

Memory deformation is an adaptive behavior of the brain. How do we remember an incredible amount of memories? It is inevitable that images overlap in memory, especially since some of them are similar and therefore create interference. And you also need to exaggerate the difference between similar events so as not to confuse them. Through my art, I explore this property of our consciousness and show you how incredible landscapes, bright celestial shades, the existence of animals in harmony and human habitats remain in my memory.
